Medicare Advantage
Medicare Advantage, also called Part C, is private coverage that replaces Original Medicare for the enrollee. The federal program pays the carrier a fixed monthly amount per member, and the carrier takes on the risk of providing all of the enrollee's Medicare-covered care.
That structural difference is the source of every meaningful trade-off in Medicare Advantage: lower or zero premiums, extra benefits like dental and vision, and an annual out-of-pocket maximum, paired with provider networks, prior-authorization requirements, and plan-by-plan formularies. We do not take a position on whether Medicare Advantage is better or worse than Original Medicare plus Medigap. We document how the two paths differ so you can reason about your own situation.
One specific point deserves emphasis. The decision between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare plus Medigap is not symmetric across time. Switching from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage is generally easy. Switching back, especially after the federal Medigap Open Enrollment Period has closed, can be hard or impossible without state-level guaranteed-issue protections. State rules are on the States hub.
