Before you compare

A few things will make the Medicare.gov plan finder more useful and will help you make a fair, apples-to-apples comparison.

  • Have your ZIP code ready. Medicare plan availability and pricing are local. Plans available in one ZIP may not be available a few miles away.
  • Have your prescription list handy. For Part D and Medicare Advantage with drug coverage, the plan finder estimates your true annual cost using your specific drugs, doses, and pharmacies.
  • Know your preferred providers. Medicare Advantage plans use networks. If you want a particular doctor or hospital, check that they are in-network before choosing.
  • Decide your path: Medigap or Medicare Advantage. These are two different ways to fill the gaps in Original Medicare. Read our Medigap overview and Medicare Advantage overview first if you are not sure which path fits.
  • Check your state rules. Medigap rules vary by state. Birthday rules, guaranteed-issue triggers, and rating methods can change what is actually available to you. Find your state on the States page.

  3. Compare and decide on your timeline

    Sort by total estimated cost, star rating, or formulary fit. Save plans for later, or print the comparison to discuss with a SHIP counselor or licensed agent of your choice.
